History Of Climate, Migrations & Origins Pt. 2

Episode Summary

Content Analysis Key Themes and Main Ideas 1. The deep historical and geological origins of wine, emphasizing the role of water, Earth's formation, and climate change. 2. Professor Attilio Scienza's scientific perspective on the evolution of viticulture. 3. The impact of major geological and climatic events (e.g., the Great Flood, glacier melt) on human migration and the development of agriculture. 4. The process and significance of the domestication of wild grapevines. 5. The ""fourth migration"" of humans, driven by environmental changes, and its indirect connection to the spread of agriculture and viticulture. Summary This segment from the ""Everybody needs a bit of Scienza series"" features Professor Attilio Scienza, Italy's leading vine geneticist, discussing the ancient origins of wine. He posits that ""All of wine is pouring from water,"" highlighting water's critical role in both grape agriculture and the historical migration of vines and wine culture. Scienza explains how various geological phases and drastic climate changes throughout Earth's history, from the Cretaceous period (influencing Burgundy soils) to the Pliocene and Holocene, created the conditions for wild vines to emerge. He delves into the pivotal moment around 6,200 years BCE, marked by a significant temperature drop and ""the Great Flood,"" which initiated the ""fourth migration"" of humans. This period, followed by a slight warming around 5,600 years BCE, saw humans transition from nomads to settled communities, leading to the domestication of wild grapevines and the birth of agriculture, facilitated by the creation of major rivers from melting glaciers. He connects the ""fourth migration"" to the rising waters of the Black Sea, forcing widespread human displacement and further shaping agricultural development. Takeaways * Wine's existence is fundamentally linked to Earth's geological history and dramatic climate changes. * Water is crucial not only for grape cultivation but also for the historical spread of wine culture through migration. * Key geological periods (e.g., Cretaceous, Pliocene, Holocene) significantly influenced the development of wine-growing soils. * The ""Great Flood"" (around 6,200 BCE) and subsequent environmental shifts were catalysts for human migration and the start of settled agriculture. * The domestication of wild grapevines was a direct result of humans forming stable communities and engaging in agriculture. * The ""fourth migration"" refers to historical human displacements caused by environmental changes, such as rising sea levels. Notable Quotes * ""All of wine is pouring from water."

About This Episode

All of the wine that we have now, not only was born of water, the grape itself, but also the wine we have now was born of the travel across water. So water is incredibly important not only to the actual agriculture of grapes and wine, but also to the migration of vines and the culture of wine as it developed over civilizations. Is, that would use that geological. Yeah. We are representative. It's a it's a it's a If he goes on too much longer than I get lost and I forget to tell you the important things he already said. So what we're talking about here is how we were gifted the joy of wine tasting, and of wine coming to us, through the birth of Earth over various geological phases. And during each phase, as we can see in this graph, there were huge climate changes. The important thing to take note of on this particular graph is the red line in the center, which shows an average temperature and then we're looking at the variations of extreme heat and extreme cold above and below that average temperature. The cretaceous period in sort of in particular was extremely important to the development of, soils in Burgundy. So a lot of what we have now in our Viticulture experience comes from these various changes in, geology and also climate. So the very last phase on the on the graph, the pliocene, and the whole scene, periods are the times that are most important for our discussion today because they show when wild vines emerge and then when human beings create a domesticated lines. That we call that in the in the Are you enjoying this podcast? There is so much more high quality wine content available for mama jumbo shrimp. You know, So this this slide shows an expanded version of the very tail end of the previous slide. It's important to note these particular, very drastic changes we see, on the vertical axis hot and humid going down to cold and dry. And when we look at the particular event, six thousand two hundred years before Christ, this was the very famous, great flood. This this is is what, initiated what we know as the fourth migration There was a tiny drop, just at that moment, because of the great flood. So we have had quite a long period of time where the temperatures were quite high. And when we arrived at six thousand two hundred years before the moment of the state blood, the temperature drops just slightly. At this point, we find traces of planned material that could exist in extreme cold, and that's the first planned material that we that we see that shows proof of this change in the climate right at that moment in time. So just after, the the great flood, you see a a tiny rise in the temperature again. And in this peak of heat is when agriculture remained again. This was the moment when wild grapevines were first domesticated. Before this moment, human beings were no man's, they were hunters. They didn't stay in one place. When this, moment in time arrived with this tiny elevation of heat, human beings, stomped moving around as much. They formed stable communities. They reared domesticated animals, and they began an agriculture with domestic succeeded plants. And, So at the moment of five thousand six hundred years we've seen, which we see in the box at the bottom of this slide, this was the moment when as the glaciers began to melt four and of the major rivers were created, and these rivers allowed agriculture to develop. In Paucasian mythology. Okay. So at at this moment, what began to happen was the freshwater of of the Black sea or all of these rivers, expelled themselves as the water started to rise, the Mediterranean entered into the black sea. So we had a combination of salt water mixing with freshwater. So it was at this moment as the black sea waters rose and submerged everything. All of humanity that lived in that region had to migrate. They all had to meet. They couldn't live. It was flooded. And this became known as the fourth migration. Listen to the Italian wine podcast wherever you get your podcasts.
