Summary This segment features an interview with Masters of Wine Andrea Lonardi and Gabriele Gorelli, hosted by Stevie Kim, promoting their upcoming blind tasting session at the Wine2Wine forum's 10th-anniversary celebration. They discuss their distinctive ""detective-like"" methodology for blind tasting, which emphasizes logical reasoning and structured analysis over mere guessing. The purpose of their session is to teach attendees a systematic approach to identifying wine styles and quality levels, building confidence through a ""funnel-shaped"" progression from broad observations to fine details. They explain their decision to use three different Pinot Noirs in the blind tasting due to the grape's diverse expressions globally. The discussion also touches upon how their approach reflects the evolving wine business, which increasingly focuses on wine style rather than only winemaking techniques. Ultimately, they aim to provide a transferable analytical method applicable to various professional and personal contexts, not just wine tasting. Sixty one people so far. Hello, everybody. My name is Stevie Kim, and this is not the Ambassador's Quana, although I'm in the podcast booth. We don't know how to dress now. I've got my cashmere turtleneck on because it's hot. It's cold. Everyone has COVID. It is absolutely a mess. But today, I have asked Gabrielle Gorelli. You know, he is absolutely everywhere. We call him in Italian. And, of course, the newly anointed master of wine, Andrea Lenardi. These folks are extremely busy. It's really hard to synchronize the agenda for all of these people here, but Today, they made an exception. So today, we're going to be talking about wine to wine. Wine to wine will be on the thirteenth and the fourteenth of November. It is our tenth year anniversary edition. We are so excited about that. And we will be having five tastings. So usually, as you know, there's no tasting involved at wine two wine because it's all about just sharing business ideas. They're back to back sessions, often they're three parallel sessions. And we talk about wine business. There's not much of wine tasting, but for the tenth edition, we are bringing five, five wine tasting. And what that will be about is kinda giving the backstage the behind the scene as to how the wine critics mostly score wines and how they judge wines. So we have a session with wine and spirits. We have a session with wine enthusiasts. We have a session with Decanta, and we have a session with wine pair. And lastly, we have a session with also, I thought this would be very interesting with andurant Monardi and Gabrilegorelli. Why because they will be sharing with you the rationale behind how they taste like a master of wine. The format is that we are going to be doing this as a blind tasting. Okay. So We have hundred and fifty seats available. So if you have, purchased the ticket, then you can sign up. I believe we are now equipped for you to sign up for these tastings so that we will not be overwhelmed with, you know, too many people trying to get in. So if you haven't done that or if you haven't purchased your ticket yet, that's what you should be doing. And sign up for their session, which is on Monday. Do you remember what time it is? It's three to three forty five. Yep. Andrea and Gabriela, tell us what you'll be doing. We'll do this in about just ten minutes. We won't talk about this forever, but tell us kind of the format and the purpose and your philosophy behind this blind tasting. Andre, you wanna go first. Yeah. Thank you. Yeah. He's the boss. Yeah. You can tell. Yeah. No. No. No. Just And the glasses, what happened? You got glasses? You became an MW and you got eyeglasses. What happened? You're getting old. I'm getting old. I'm getting old. I'm getting old. It's new. Right? The glasses? Yeah. Yeah. So we were trying to see how they finally become master of one that is first very important. Because the three Italian guys introduced it to the institute also a different approach to get master of wine. And the approach was regarding, especially the study how we approach a tasting. So we decided that we will show three different pinot noir and we will do an analysis by layers. So by first saying, okay, this is pin on wire. Second white is pin on wire. And the reason, because it is pin on wire and by using element from different wines. And after that, we will try to see which type of pin on wire, which style, which quality level. And so it will be a discussion between me and Gabrielle and will include also Joseph noted to see and how to demonstrate how you can approach a problematic, how you can approach an issue. Right. So Robert Joseph will be moderating this session, and Andrea has temporarily Issues. But you we are totally interchangeable. So I I can continue from when Yes. So the idea is to show not between the people that we sort of guess the wines that we're not doing that. We are tasting like detectives and we are writing or argumenting like lawyers what it's in the glass. And that's the reason why we should be able to even get to the wrong conclusions, but for the right reasons. You know, it's a good thing to be. And at the same time, I believe that's part there, a hundred and sixty people attending to that tasting would, add a lot of interest and, complexity to the tasting we're gonna hold together. Yeah. So the whole point is it's going to be interactive. Right? Andrea's back. So the whole point is, I know you don't have wifi where you live. Right? Oh, that that should that should be me. That should be me. I live in Tulsa. I know. You that's why you guys are friends. There's no wifi. We we had to interact among what we had Yeah. Available. That's the thing. Yeah. So what do you think? Like, what we do? We are always obsessed about learning objectives. Right? So What do you think would be the learning objectives for the attendees? Systematic approach to the testing not intended as the SAT that's is in the WSTT. Right. It's to the to the next level. With your own vocabulary, with your own sort of, intellectual understanding of things, but made in a funnel shaped, so from the broader to the more finer detail, and also everything connected. What I like to say about blind testing, but not only, but when you make observations in the Anglo Saxon way of doing that, it's, like, very arithmetic, very systematic. You do two observation. You drop one conclusion. It's as simple as that. But if you don't do that, you sound like you're like waffling. That's the whole point. The whole point, it's being backed up with what we taste. And same things that are relevant to the glass and not just guesses. We're not talking guesses. We we'll be happy to go wrong for the right reasons once again. So do you think a little bit what you'll be showing me? It's kind of in a way The three of you, of course, Pietro is still at his very last leg of his completion of the master wine studies, but, you know, the way the three of you taste or this method that you have expanded Is it fair to say it's something original or is it just more of an adaptation of something that was already existed? Of course, there is a degree of, preexistent approach but we should be putting ourselves on the shoes of people that when we started the NW almost ten years ago, we weren't almost aware of many styles available throughout the wine world. So we had to make a step back and to make it possible to to understand what was available because we didn't have any heritage of people telling us, you know, this is going to be, Ron, and versus what is a for Morgan. There was no structural information about that. I mean, people were holistically guessing these things and everyone adds his own ability to spot the markets to work on the reasons. But, again, that wasn't structured. So if you have an incredible amount of information, you need to shrink it down to what you can actually get and extract from the information. You need to simplify a lot. Then you can start building again on those, simplifications, on those mind maps on those, you know, connections, but the work that we did was a total re, I would say, classification and rationalization of what we had available in front of us, which is not what we used to have when we actually started. Now it's changing, luckily, because of the internet, because of the, online availability of the wine and everything. But there is still a degree of knowledge that needs to be built from the very basic bricks of knowledge and connection between the areas. Okay. Just quickly, Andrea, why did you guys choose pinot noir? Pinot noir? I think the option that we we like, in order to explain as a base because there are some much more complex, segment of the the market or the grape varieties is pinot noir or chardonnay. Since we have only three glasses, that is what we can have. So we decided to go pinot noir, but, I'm glad to say that pinot noir or chardonnay could be the same. And actually, they come from the same region, and they really are today represented in different places around the world, a different segment in terms of sales, and also in terms of pricing that represent quality level. It's very interesting what we've gathered, tried to explain. And, and I think that, in the last ten years, we got the chance, to discover the wine world that is that is different than it was ten years ago. Ten years ago, we were in the quality level system. We were only referring about quality and especially about winemaking. Today, we work in a wine business that is strongly related to wine style. Mhmm. And I think that, these three guys They have really introduced the concept of first, let's say, explain which is the style of the wine. That is something that it is much easier to define and everybody can define. Even a person that doesn't know pin on what can recognize if it is the fresh fruit driven pinot noir if it is a very complex, rich, powerful type of pinot noir. So and this is the first step. And it is, a step of security where you start to build your self confidence and announce, let's say, of Okay? Which is then the next step. And for that reason, what we will explain is something that you can use daily. You cannot use that when you are tasting. You can use also when you are discussing with your team. When you discuss a new issue that you have in a company, and started to build some pills, some pillars where after that, you start to develop your structuring, you are structuring your analysis for a subject. So we will try to transfer that, methodology of working, not how to taste exactly a pinot noir. It's not our need, actually, no, Deborah. What do you think? No. No. That's exactly what it is. I mean, it's having to take home a sort of a method that will help you in many ways. And it's just a structure of the method that you can apply on many things you do. And, and also it's also about communicating effectively, which is increasingly important in, you know, in our world. Because if you don't show that, you know, other things, and that you are aware of a certain context. Some things lie in. You took initiative, but without having a backup on, knowledge or, consciousness of what's things are about. You know, I'm just very excited to have you both leading this tasting. It's the first time you guys are doing it together. Right? Like No. No. No. No. I I was about to say you because I know that, for the first time these two guys on stage, they're with me. No. It's been two days ago in Paris. Oh, okay. I don't wanna say it wasn't impromptu. It was something that, you know, I was supposed to leave and also I was Oh, the golden vines thingy. Use, the golden vines, and the last, very last producer of the second master course of which I led on Friday was Andrea, which, I mean, happened. To be underlined. Yeah. I was over by this time of the stage. By that, it will be the first time that we will work, at the same level. So Yeah. Listen. However, it goes. I'm very excited and I think many of us are. We are very much looking forward to this. Know, kind of the behind the scenes and the way you guys think and how the brotherhood of, you know, joining forces. Before we go, I just wanna ask one question to Andrea. Has your life changed since you've been anointed as the master of wine? It's very difficult to say. I still feel inside that there is a big change. I still to exercise myself every day, to be a master of blindness. I'm very quiet. I'm much quieter than before. So I don't know what happened. Right. Well, you got glasses. You have the now the intellectual look now. Reflective of fate. Yeah. Yeah. It's, repairing. So so but I I don't know whether I'm not ready to answer this question. Okay. Well, thank you for both joining us. I mean, Gabriel, you're a veteran now, or my. So, you know, I don't need to ask that question. So thank you both for joining us in your very busy schedule, and I will see you guys very, very soon. By the way, are you running the New York Barathon as well? Yes. I will. What about Andrea? Not yet. No. Not yet. Is this your first time? Nope. My my first time in New York. Yes. It's going to be fantastic. It's the best marathon also because they're the New Yorkers. I've done it only once many, many years ago. You'll have a great time. So looking forward to that and let us know your time. We're cycling before I went to Pine on Sunday morning. Okay. And everybody everybody that wants to join us in verona. Okay. Sunday Sunday morning. How do they sign up? How do they do this? They just bring a bicycle and they come to the police jail and that we would My police tell her where? Like, just my police tell her. Yeah. But, you know, everybody knows that. So they can be proactive with us. Okay. Yeah. The only thing is that I didn't know that thing, but Okay? You see. You see. Everybody except Gabriela. Everybody. Okay. Alright. Listen. That's it. I'm gonna sign up because I know we're all very busy. Thank you for joining us, and I hope you listeners will join us together to follow this absolutely fantastic behind the scene tasting.
