Summary This segment of the Italian Wine Podcast provides comprehensive profiles of two significant Italian white grape varieties: Verdicchio and Verduzzo. It begins by detailing Verdicchio, noting its origin, historical resilience through plague epidemics, and its two main biotypes, Trebbiano di Soave and Trebbiano di Lugana (Turbiana), highlighting their genetic distinctions. The discussion covers Verdicchio's vineyard characteristics—its vigor, late ripening, and preference for limestone and clay soils—and its sensory profile in the glass, with notes of citrus, green apple, and fennel. It elaborates on the diversity of Verdicchio styles, ranging from dry to sweet and still to sparkling, differentiating between the more delicate Yézy wines and the more complex, age-worthy Matelica expressions. Traditional food pairings for Verdicchio are also suggested. The segment then transitions to Verduzzo, focusing on its two sub-varieties: Verduzzo Giallo and Verduzzo Verde. It explains their distinct growing preferences—Verde thriving in flatter lands for drier wines and Giallo performing best in steep hillsides for sweet, air-dried wines, notably Ramandolo DOCG. Verduzzo's vineyard traits, such as resistance to Botrytis and sensitivity to downy mildew, are covered. In the glass, Verduzzo Verde is described as light-bodied with citrusy floral notes, while Verduzzo Giallo yields richer, fuller-bodied sweet wines with apricot, honey, and nutty characteristics. Food pairing recommendations are provided for both drier and sweeter Verduzzo styles. The podcast also intersperses promotional messages for their educational resources, including books and study maps.
