Summary In this episode of the Italian Wine Podcast, recorded live at an event in Düsseldorf, Germany, host Stevie interviews Enrico Coser, owner of Ronco del Gnemiz. Enrico shares the history of his family winery, founded 33 years ago in Friuli Venezia Giulia by his parents, with his father being an enologist. He explains how the winery's name, Ronco del Gnemiz, derives from ""Ronco"" (terraced vineyards) and ""Tasi"" (badgers, which indicate optimal grape ripeness). While their signature wine is Fosarina, a white blend featuring local Friulian varieties like Friulano and Malvasia Istriana, the master class at the event focused on their red Merlot-Cabernet blend. Enrico highlights Germany as one of their very first and consistently strong export markets, noting their presence in over 50 countries. He elaborates on their strategic shift, initiated even before the pandemic, to expand into numerous markets with smaller quantities per market, thereby minimizing risk from economic downturns or market closures. He specifically mentions their developing efforts in North America and emerging Asian markets. Takeaways * Ronco del Gnemiz is a second-generation family winery established 33 years ago in Friuli Venezia Giulia. * The winery's name, Ronco del Gnemiz, reflects its vineyard cultivation method and a natural indicator of grape ripeness. * While Friuli Venezia Giulia produces red wines, it is predominantly known for its white wines, featuring unique local varieties. * Diversifying export markets across more than 50 countries is a core strategy for Ronco del Gnemiz to mitigate economic risks. * Germany has historically been a significant and early export market for Ronco del Gnemiz. * Post-COVID, the winery is actively developing new markets, particularly in Asia, to minimize reliance on singular regions. Notable Quotes * ""I'm the second generation of, of our winery, me, with my brother, Mateo, and, our winery born with my parents thirty three years ago."

And the good it's a province. They call you. It's the super region is that you see. My father and my mother bought this first four actors in an opinion. And, already also, some other four actors of woods. That covered all around our opinions. And, and started our our story. The name of Ronco Ditasi, born with the presence of, many, badgers, Tasi, In the area, we have several colleagues of patterns that come also to eat some grapes when they are ripe. And, we like to think that, when they start to eat a grape, it's the right time to pick up, you know, to our best. And, Ronki is the cultivation of vineyard, by Terrace, want, what inside is, it's quite steep, and then we need to do those terraces to to cultivate in a better way, the soil. Okay. So is your signature wine the wine spoken about in this master class or it's one later on? What's what is your signature wine? Our signature wine is a white wine. But the one that we had in Moscow is our signature red wine. It's a dessert man. You know what I mean, and that you see of polio, we don't have any local initiatives for the coronavirus. Then, from many centers now, we're participating in the law in Cabernet. And this this blend that we're talking about at master class. Is a good work. Those varietals also, during this centuries, developed pretty well in our yard and then, can give a very nice, identity, about the varietals and about Okay. So the master class that, your wine is teaching it is the four delays Yeah. In Italy. Have blends in Italy. Okay. But our signature wine is a white wine. We are, white region, mostly. And our secret wine is, it's also a glaze of land. With a big, the biggest part of percentage of local varieties like Thrunano. The old great doctor Catruano in Malvas is triana. They're always talking by, and they know what I have for our wines for, for many, many years. And, for us, I have very good luck. Okay. So you come here. And, yeah, is there any markets that you are wanting to explore, you're not in already? We we we try to to develop our market net the best way that we can. Right now, we export in more than fifty countries. After COVID for sure, we would like to develop more. It's not trying to minimize the the risk. Right. About maybe a closure for a market or something like that. We export pretty well in United States in North America and general. We we are starting now in Asia. This is a market that for sure we will develop more. Okay. Yeah. No. Because we were speaking earlier about how there's been sort of a change in strategy for marketing. Do you think that your winery in particular has changed its strategy slightly after the pandemic and, how so yeah, luckily, probably we started to to change a little bit before the pandemic. I'm working. I I now took the ages over. And, I joined the company in in two thousand and four after after my studies in the military. From two thousand and four, to today, we got several periods of stock markets, but I don't know, it'd be Europe and Boulder exchange could be the the the first increase in two thousand and eight. It could be the Brexit. It could be several markets that have a a big stop. And, this, help us to develop more markets and then try to have maybe smaller quantity, but in many markets. Right. And this will add to minimize the risk of excellence. Okay. After COVID, for sure, we will develop this, more and more. Well, I appreciate you spending the time to speak to me here today.
